Design work: Beauty and fragrance

Beauty website design and development for a fragrance brand: Aura

Aura is a perfume store we designed for a fragrance brand: a pale homepage with one serif headline and one bottle, a product page that sets the bottle beside the price and similar scents, and the mark on a bottle label. The page also sets out how we develop a beauty and fragrance website behind screens like these: product data for scent, size variants, checkout and the shipping rules perfume falls under.

What the beauty website had to do

A perfume cannot be smelled through a screen. An online store has to sell it with the bottle, a few words about the scent and enough detail to buy without doubt.

The design gives the bottle most of the page. The homepage is one serif headline, one line of text and one bottle on a pale misted landscape, with the menu in a single pill. The product page sets the photograph beside the name, the rating, the scent, similar scents and the price, with Add to Cart in black.

  • The bottle leadsOne large photograph on each page.
  • Serif for the scentHeadlines and names in a tall serif.
  • One clear actionOne black button on a quiet page.

Beauty website development, from the product data to the delivered bottle

The pages are the part a buyer sees. A beauty store runs on four more parts behind them, and they decide most of the build.

  1. Product data written for scent and shade

Notes, scent family, concentration, sizes and the ingredient list as structured fields, so the filters, the product pages and the Google listings all read from one record.
  2. Variants for size, sets and samples

The 50 ml and 100 ml bottles and a discovery set of samples as variants with their own stock and price, and gift wrap with a note added in the bag.
  3. Checkout on Shopify or a custom store

Shopify where its checkout and apps fit the range; a custom or headless build where subscriptions, a shade finder or wholesale orders set the store apart. Payments run through a provider either way.
  4. Shipping rules that know what is in the bag

Alcohol-based perfume routed to ground services within the US, with air and international options held back for those items, and the delivery date the checkout shows worked out from that service.

What the Aura beauty website does

Every screen answers what a buyer asks before paying for a scent they cannot smell: what it smells like, whether it suits them, and what it really costs.

  1. A product page that describes the scent in words

Top, heart and base notes in the same terms on every bottle, the concentration, a choice of 50 ml or 100 ml, and the price and Add to Cart beside the photograph.

  2. A shop that narrows by scent family and strength

Filters for family, strength and occasion beside the grid, so a buyer who likes one woody scent finds the others without knowing their names.

  3. A discovery set before the full bottle

Five samples in one set, offered on every product page, with the set price shown as a step toward the full bottle rather than a separate shop.

  4. Reviews from buyers, shown in full

The rating, the spread of stars and every review with how long the scent lasted, with a filter for the newest and the lowest ratings as well as the highest.

  5. A bag and checkout built for the phone

The bag with each bottle and its size, gift wrap with a note, the ground shipping date, the total and express payment buttons, in a single column for a phone.

  6. An identity carried from the screen to the bottle

The Aura mark and wordmark on the site and on the bottle label, with the pale aqua, black and gold palette and the tall serif the homepage sets.

Before you brief anyone

Planning a beauty or fragrance website? Settle these first

Settle how scents are described, what each product claims and how it ships before the homepage.

Request a scoping call
  1. Decide how a scent or a shade is described before anyone draws the product page.

A buyer cannot smell or test through a screen, so notes, family, strength and finish are written in the same terms on every product, and the filters read from them.

  2. Decide what lowers the risk of buying blind.

Discovery sets, samples, reviews from real buyers and an easy exchange belong beside the price, where the doubt arises.

  3. Decide what each product claims.

Copy that promises to treat acne or protect from the sun makes a product a drug in the FDA’s eyes, so product text is checked before the catalog goes live, and alcohol-based perfume is set to ship by ground.

  4. Then pick the platform with the scope written down.

Our Shopify development page covers stores Shopify suits, and web development covers custom builds. Our ecommerce page sets out how we approach online stores, and our guide to website redesign cost explains the budget.

What does beauty website design include?

A homepage that sets the brand’s mood, a shop that narrows by scent family, skin type or shade, product pages with notes or ingredients, sizes and reviews, a way to sample before the full size, and a checkout built for the phone. The Aura design gives the bottle most of every page, with a tall serif and one black button.

Do you develop beauty websites as well as design them?

Yes. We design beauty and fragrance stores through our web design service and build them on Shopify or as custom stores through our web development work, with the product data, variants, checkout and shipping rules connected. Aura, shown here, is design work: the site and the brand.

How do you sell perfume online when shoppers cannot smell it?

With words, comparisons and a low-risk first step. Notes, family and strength are written the same way on every product, similar scents sit beside each one, reviews say how long the scent lasts, and a discovery set lets a buyer try several before a full bottle.

Should a beauty brand use Shopify or a custom build?

Shopify suits most beauty and fragrance ranges: its checkout, apps and themes cover variants, samples and gift options. A custom or headless build pays when a shade finder, subscriptions, a loyalty program or wholesale orders set the store apart, or when the catalog outgrows what a theme handles well.

Can a perfume website ship fragrance by air or overseas?

Not through USPS when the perfume contains alcohol: it may not go by international mail or by domestic air, and within the US it travels by ground. Private carriers set their own rules for flammable liquids, so the store’s shipping options are set item by item during the build.

How much does a beauty website cost?

The size of the catalog, the platform, variants and samples, the shipping rules and the brand work set the figure, so we quote after a scoping call. Our guide to website redesign cost explains what moves it.

Was a brand identity designed with the fragrance website?

Yes. The Aura mark and wordmark were designed with the site, and the page shows them on the label of a square glass bottle with a gold cap.

What a beauty website has to get right before launch

A beauty store sells products the buyer cannot smell or test, often at a sale price, and ships liquids that carriers restrict, and each of those has a rule behind it.

  1. Ground only

Perfume shipped by ground in the US

USPS bars perfume containing alcohol from international mail and from domestic air transport; within the US it may travel by ground.

    USPS shipping restrictions
  2. Intended use

Claims that keep a cosmetic a cosmetic

FDA reads intended use from claims on labels, in ads and on the internet, so a product sold to treat acne or to protect from the sun is regulated as a drug, or as both.

    FDA: cosmetic, drug or both
  3. §233.1

Sale prices from a real former price

The FTC treats a former price as honest only if the item was openly offered at it, in good faith, on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period.

    16 CFR 233.1
  4. Real reviews

    Ratings from real buyers

Since October 21, 2024, the FTC’s rule bans fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, and presenting a review section as complete after negative reviews were suppressed.

    FTC reviews rule
  5. Product + Offer

Product pages ready for Google listings

Google’s merchant listing markup requires each product’s name, image, price and currency, and recommends its shipping and returns.

    Google merchant listings
  6. 2.5 s

    A bottle-led homepage that loads

A good Largest Contentful Paint is within 2.5 seconds at the 75th percentile, which a full-width bottle photograph misses unless it is sized for each screen.

    Core Web Vitals

We write product claims, prices and shipping rules to these during scoping, so the catalog launches with nothing to take down.
