Manufacturing website design built around how engineers qualify a supplier

Manufacturing website design at Redlio Labs is planned around the check an engineer or buyer runs before contacting a supplier. Capabilities, materials, certifications and specs each get a page that reads on a phone, a named owner at the plant and a quote request beside it.

  • Capability, spec and certificate pages, each with an owner
  • A quote request built around what estimators need
  • Designed and built by the same team

Manufacturing website design starts with the supplier check

Manufacturing website design is the design of a manufacturer’s website for the people who qualify suppliers: engineers checking whether a part or process meets a specification, and buyers checking whether the supplier is a safe choice. It puts capabilities, materials, certifications and specifications where both can find, verify and share them.

That check starts before anyone calls. In a 2019 Thomas survey of 266 industrial buyers, 73% said they pay close attention to a supplier’s website when evaluating it. Thomas runs the Thomasnet supplier platform. A site with capabilities in adjectives, specs in PDFs and certificates without issuer or scope leaves the check to a call that may never come.

So we design a manufacturing website from the facts that check needs, each on a page an engineer can find in Google and read on a phone. Each fact gets a named owner at the plant who keeps it current, and every page ends in a quote request shaped by the estimators who answer it.

Our manufacturing web design services

We offer six kinds of work for manufacturers and industrial suppliers. A new site combines the first three, and an existing site starts with the second. Our [industrial website design for a steel supplier](/case-studies/industrial-website-design), shown as design work under the project name Ironix, is the published example.

Thirty minutes on what your buyers check before they call

We go through the capabilities, certificates and specs a buyer would look for, and where the current site holds them. On the call are the designers and engineers who would make the new one. Every request gets a reply within 12 hours, an NDA comes before the first call, and we say plainly whether a new site is the right spend.

The page list

Six facts we design a manufacturing website around

A supplier check runs on facts, not claims. We give each one its own place on the site and agree who keeps it true after launch.

  • Capabilities, with their limits

We give each process its own page with its materials, sizes, tolerances and volumes, so an engineer can rule the supplier in or out without a call.
  • Industries and applications

We show the sectors served and the standards each one demands, so a buyer from that sector finds work close to their own.
  • Certifications a buyer can verify

We list each certificate with the body that issued it, its scope and its number, so procurement can confirm it with the issuer.
  • Specifications as pages

We publish specs as product pages that read on a phone and carry structured data, with the PDF attached for the spec package.
  • The quote request

We design the request form with the estimators, so it asks once for everything they need to price the job.
  • An owner for every fact

We name the person at the plant who keeps each page current and show a review date, so a page changes when its fact does.

Where these facts live in an ERP, a PIM or a spreadsheet, our manufacturing software development work covers the systems behind the site.

Spec sheets as PDFs or as product pages on an industrial website

A manufacturer can publish specifications three ways. We recommend the third for a catalog, because buyers find and read the page while engineers still want the file.

PDF spec sheet onlyProduct page onlyProduct page with the PDF attached

For a redesign that moves an existing catalog, the website redesign checklist sets out what has to carry across before launch.

What a manufacturer’s website must give an engineer or buyer before they call

A buyer can hold any supplier’s website to these eight checks, and an agency’s plan for one, ours included. Each check that states a rule links the standard or the Google documentation behind it.

  1. Each capability on its own page, with its limits stated: processes, materials, sizes, tolerances and volumes.
  2. Each certification with its issuing body, scope and certificate number. ISO does not certify companies itself and points buyers to the certification body to verify one.
  3. Specifications on product pages, with the PDF as a download. Google indexes PDF files, but only a page can sit beside a quote request and carry product markup.
  4. The same specs and structured data on phones as on desktop, because Google indexes the mobile version of a page.
  5. Product structured data on single-product pages, with the knowledge that Google’s product snippets need a price offer, a review or a rating before extra detail appears.
  6. Product filters whose combinations stay out of the crawl, as Google’s faceted navigation guidance advises, while each product line keeps a page of its own.
  7. A quote request with a label on every field, a drawing upload and nothing asked twice in one session, as WCAG 2.2 Redundant Entry requires.
  8. Buttons and links at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels and text at a contrast of at least 4.5:1, the WCAG 2.2 minimums for target size and contrast.

WCAG 2.2 also asks for a text alternative for every drawing, chart and process photo, so an engineer using a screen reader gets the same facts.

When manufacturing website design is the wrong choice

We advise against a new manufacturing website in three cases:

  • The facts are not ready

Where capabilities, tolerances or certifications cannot be stated yet, a new design turns back into a brochure. We advise settling what the company can publish first, then designing around it.
  • The product data is the problem

Where product records in the ERP are incomplete or disagree, a website only puts the gaps on display. We recommend fixing the data at its source before the catalog is designed.
  • Every order comes from a few accounts

Where all the work arrives through a few long-standing customers and their procurement portals, a new site has few new buyers to reach. We recommend a refresh that keeps capabilities and certificates current.

A new manufacturing website earns its cost where engineers and buyers compare suppliers online and the current site cannot answer them.

Discovery

We map your workflows, systems, and constraints with the people who use them every day, before anything is scoped. For a manufacturer, we read the quote requests the sales team received this year and ask the estimators what each one was missing.

Why manufacturers choose Redlio Labs for industrial website design

  1. Pages for the supplier check

We plan the site around what an engineer and a buyer must see before they contact a supplier, one page at a time.
  2. Facts that stay current

We hand over the site with an owner and a review date for every capability, certificate and spec page.
  3. Design and build in one team

The people who design the site build it, so the spec tables and the quote form work the way they were drawn.
  4. The plant systems as well

Our engineers also build manufacturing software, so a link from the website to the ERP or CRM is scoped by people who know both sides.

What is manufacturing website design?

Manufacturing website design is the design of a website that lets engineers and buyers qualify a manufacturer without calling first. It presents capabilities, materials, certifications and specs on pages found in Google, read on a phone and shared in a buying team, each with a quote request. We design and build these sites for B2B manufacturers and industrial suppliers.

What should a manufacturing website include?

We include a page for each capability with its limits, the materials, the industries served and each certification with its issuer and scope. Spec pages come next, with a quote request on each, and work an engineer recognizes as close to their own part or process. The eight checks on this page list what a buyer can verify.

What makes industrial website design different from general B2B web design?

Industrial website design differs from other B2B web design in what the reader checks: specifications, tolerances, materials and certifications rather than a pitch. Where an engineer sits in the buying group, the site is judged on whether a part or process fits a specification. So in industrial web design we put those facts above every claim.

How much does a manufacturing website cost?

We quote a manufacturing website once its scope is written down, so no figure exists before scoping. The capability and product pages, the spec content to write or convert, and any ERP or CRM link move the price most. Turning spec sheets into product pages is real content work, so we count it as its own line.

Our guide to website redesign cost lists the lines to compare between quotes.

Should our spec sheets be PDFs or web pages?

We recommend both: a product page for each product, with the PDF attached as a download. Google indexes PDFs, but a page reads on a phone, carries product markup and sits beside the quote request. The PDF still serves the engineer who files it in a spec package.

Can a manufacturing website connect to our ERP or CRM?

Yes, we connect quote requests to the CRM and feed product pages from the ERP or PIM that holds the data, instead of retyping it. We scope each connection before we price the site. The plant systems themselves, such as ERP, MES and shop floor data, are covered on our manufacturing software development page.

How long does a manufacturing website redesign take?

We set the timeline after scoping, because the content sets the pace more than the design: capability pages to write, spec sheets to convert and certificates to collect. We work in stages, and someone from the plant reviews each template before the next one starts. The website redesign checklist covers what to settle before the work begins.

Do you have manufacturing website examples?

Our published example is design work for a steel supplier, shown under the project name Ironix. The industrial website design case study shows its homepage for desktop and phone. It is design work, and the page claims no client result.
