Custom mobile app development, from the first screen to the store and after

We design and build iOS and Android apps for mid-size and large companies: customer apps, field and workforce apps, and the mobile side of systems you already run, released to the stores and kept working through every operating system update.

The hard part of a mobile app comes after the launch

The first version is the part everyone plans for. Then the operating system updates, a store review rejects a release, the app has to work with no signal in a warehouse, and the backend it depends on changes underneath it.

An app is a product with two stores, thousands of device combinations and users who never update. Building it like a website is how it ends up with one-star reviews six months in.

So we plan the release process, the offline behaviour and the backend contract before the first screen, and we stay on the app after launch.

  • The backend contract

The APIs the app depends on, versioned so a server change never breaks old installs.
  • Offline and poor signal

What the app does with no connection, decided per screen rather than discovered in the field.
  • The release path

Store accounts, review rules and update policy, settled before the first build.

Mobile app development services

Six kinds of mobile work. Most companies need an app and the backend it talks to.

Native app, cross-platform app, or web app

Three ways to put software in someone’s pocket. The right one depends on what the app has to do, not on fashion.

Web appCross-platform appNative apps

If people use it occasionally at a desk, a web app is often the honest answer. Build a mobile app when it is used on the move, every day, or needs the device.

What to settle before a mobile app is built

Six decisions that are cheap before the first build and expensive after the first release, whoever builds the app.

  1. Whose store accounts the app is published under (they should be yours)
  2. The minimum operating system versions you will support, and for how long
  3. What the app does offline, screen by screen
  4. How the backend APIs are versioned so old installs keep working
  5. How crashes and errors are reported, and who is alerted
  6. How updates are released, and whether users can be required to update

We design, build and grow software for mid-size and large companies, and the people who build it are the people you talk to.

When you should not build a mobile app

Three cases where we will recommend something else:

  • A web app does the job

If it is used occasionally and needs no device features, a responsive web app costs less and reaches everyone.
  • Nobody will maintain it

An app needs updates every year to keep working. Without someone to own that, it decays in the stores.
  • The backend is not ready

An app is only as good as the systems behind it. If those are fragile, fix them first.

A mobile app earns its cost when it is used on the move, every day, or needs the camera, location or offline work a browser cannot give.

From the backend contract to the store and after

Step 1 of 5

Discovery

We map your workflows, systems, and constraints with the people who use them every day, before anything is scoped. For mobile: who uses the app, where, how often, and what it does with no signal.

Discovery

  • Workflow map
  • Systems inventory
  • Constraints and risks

What you are actually buying

  • Designed and built by one team

The people who design the screens build the app, so it ships as designed.
  • An app that survives updates

Versioned APIs and a release process, so the next operating system does not break it.
  • The backend too

We build the systems the app depends on, so nothing falls between two suppliers.
  • A team that stays

The team that built the app keeps it working, release after release.

Three ways to work with us

Pick the model that fits where your project is today. Start with one and move to another as the work grows.

  • Fixed-scope project

A defined system, website or app delivered against a scope, a timeline and a price agreed before work starts. Fixed-scope software development for when you know what you need built.

  • Dedicated team or staff augmentation

Engineers and designers embedded in your team, on your tools and your roadmap. A dedicated development team or IT staff augmentation for when you have direction to give.

How much does custom mobile app development cost?

It depends on the platforms, the offline behaviour, the backend the app needs and the integrations, far more than on the number of screens. We scope those first and price against them, so the number holds.

How long does it take to build a mobile app?

Months for most first versions, planned in stages with test builds on real devices along the way. Store review adds days to each release, which we plan for rather than hope around.

Native or cross-platform?

Cross-platform, one codebase for iOS and Android, fits most business apps. Native apps fit heavy device use, the best performance, or design that follows each platform closely. We recommend per app, after discovery.

What is enterprise mobile app development?

Building apps for staff or business customers rather than the general public: field service, approvals, inspections, sales and ordering. The difference is the requirements around them: single sign-on, device management, audit trails, and integration with the systems the business already runs.

Who owns the app and the store accounts?

You do. The app is published under store accounts in your name, and the code and documentation transfer to you.

Do you maintain apps after launch?

Yes. Apps need work every year to keep up with operating system updates, and the team that built yours keeps it working and plans the next versions.
