Design work: Car rental

Car rental app development for a premium fleet, from the car list to the return: Rentease

Rentease is a premium car rental app we designed: a welcome screen with one line and one button, a dark car list with seats, location and price per day, and the identity around the app. The page also sets out how we develop a car rental app behind screens like these: live fleet availability, quotes that include every charge, driver checks, deposits and the fleet side.

What the car rental app had to do

Someone renting a car on a phone wants three answers before anything else: which cars are free, where they are and what a day costs. A rental app has to give all three on the first screen after the welcome.

The design opens on one line, From Here to Anywhere, Rent a Car Today, and one Explore Now button, then goes straight to the cars. Each car gets a dark card with its photograph, seats, pick-up location, rating and price per day, and a row of filter chips sits above the list. The interface is black, so the cars carry the screen.

  • One line, one buttonThe welcome screen asks for one tap.
  • A card for each carPhotograph, seats, place and day price.
  • Dark, so cars stand outA black screen behind every photograph.

Car rental app development, from the fleet record to the handover

The car list is the part a renter sees. A rental business runs on four more parts behind it, and they decide most of the build.

  1. Availability from the fleet system

Cars, classes, locations and recall status read from the rental or fleet management system, so a car booked at the counter or held for a recall leaves the app at once.
  2. A quote that carries every charge

Day rate, mandatory fees and optional protection priced on the server from one rate table, so the list, the car screen and the checkout show the same total.
  3. Driver checks, payment and deposits

License and identity checks through a verification provider, and payment and the deposit hold through a payment provider that takes debit as well as credit cards.
  4. Pick-up, return and the fleet side

Photo check-in and check-out with mileage and fuel or charge level, and a staff dashboard for bookings, holds, damage records and cars out of service.

What the Rentease car rental app does

Every screen answers what a renter checks before handing over a card: is the car free, what will it cost in full, and how do the keys change hands.

  1. A car screen with the facts that decide a booking

Photographs, seats, bags, transmission and range, the pick-up location on a map, the day rate and one Book this car button at the foot.

  2. Dates, places and a total with every charge

Pick-up and return place and time, the number of days, and a total that includes every mandatory fee, with optional protection shown as optional.

  3. Driver checks and payment in one flow

A license scan and a selfie check, then payment by credit or debit card with the deposit hold stated before the renter confirms.

  4. Pick-up and return with a photo check-in

The renter photographs each side of the car at pick-up and return, with mileage and fuel level logged, so both sides share one record of the car.

  5. A fleet dashboard for the rental desk

Today’s pick-ups and returns, cars on hold for a recall or damage, and availability by class, on one screen for staff. Proposed scope.

  6. An identity that carries from the icon to the card

The four-arm mark as the app icon, the yellow card with its black lattice, and the palette and type the dark screens are built from.

Before you brief anyone

Planning a car rental app? Settle these first

Settle exact car or class, where the fleet record lives and how renters pay before the screens.

Request a scoping call
  1. Decide what the renter books: a specific car, or a class with a model shown as or similar.

A premium fleet often sells the exact car, while a larger fleet sells the class; that choice sets the car screen, the availability rules and what the counter must hand over.

  2. Decide where the fleet record lives.

Availability, rates and cars held back for a recall or damage have to come from the rental or fleet system the desk already uses, so a car is never booked twice. That side is car rental software development as much as an app, and our custom software development page covers it.

  3. Decide how renters prove who they are and how they pay.

License checks, deposits and debit or credit cards shape the booking flow more than the visuals do, and New York, for one, bars refusing a rental only because someone has no credit card.

  4. Then agree the scope before comparing prices.

Our guide to mobile app development cost shows which choices move the price, and our mobile app development page covers the build.

What does car rental app development include?

A renter app with search, a car list, car screens, booking, driver checks and payment; live availability and rates from the fleet system; deposits and receipts through a payment provider; pick-up and return check-in; and a fleet dashboard for the rental desk. The renter app is the visible part; the fleet side decides most of the cost.

Do you develop car rental apps as well as design them?

Yes. We design and develop car rental apps through our mobile app development work, from the renter app to the availability, payments and fleet side. Rentease, shown here, is design work: the screens and the brand.

How much does car rental app development cost?

It depends on the fleet system it connects to, the driver checks, deposits, pick-up model and how many platforms the app runs on, so we price it after a scoping call. Our guide to mobile app development cost explains the main factors.

What is car rental software development, beside the app?

The systems the desk runs on: the fleet record, rate tables, bookings from every channel, recall and damage holds, and reports. Some rental companies keep an existing rental management system and connect the app to it; others replace it with software built around how they rent.

Should a rental company use a white label app or build a custom one?

A white label app is quicker when the rental model is standard and the platform already holds the fleet. A custom build pays where the fleet, pricing, delivery to the renter or a premium service sets the business apart, or where the company wants to own the renter accounts and their data.

Do you build car rental websites too?

Yes. Car rental website development uses the same availability, rates and checkout as the app, so a booking made on the web shows in the app and at the desk. Our web development page covers the website side.

Why design a car rental app with a dark interface?

A dark screen puts the car photographs forward, which suits a premium fleet. In Rentease every photograph sits on black, and the welcome screen offers one line and one Explore Now button.

What a car rental app has to get right before launch

A rental app hands over cars under federal recall law, quotes prices under state rental laws and takes payment under app store and card rules.

  1. 24 hours

Recalled cars held back from rental

Federal law bars a rental company with 35 or more cars from renting one under a safety recall until it is fixed, generally within 24 hours of the recall notice.

    49 U.S.C. 30120(i)
  2. All charges

A quoted rate that includes every charge

New York bars advertising or quoting a rental rate that leaves out charges, other than taxes, optional extras and mileage; airport fees have their own disclosure.

    NY GBL 396-z(8)
  3. No card needed

    Renting without a credit card

New York makes it unlawful for a rental company to refuse a rental solely because the renter does not own a credit card, so checkout plans for other ways to pay.

    NY GBL 396-z(15)
  4. 3.1.3(e)

    Rental payments outside in-app purchase

Apple requires apps selling services used outside the app to take payment by other means, such as Apple Pay or card entry, and Google Play’s billing excludes rentals too.

    App Review Guidelines
  5. PCI DSS

Deposits and card data kept off the app

PCI DSS covers anyone who stores, processes or transmits cardholder data, so payments and deposit holds run through a provider that keeps card numbers off our servers.

    PCI Security Standards Council
  6. API 36

Android builds on the current target

Since August 31, 2026, new apps and app updates on Google Play must target Android 16, API level 36, or higher.

    Google Play target API

We check recall holds, price display and payment rules against the states the fleet rents in during scoping, so the app launches with nothing to rebuild. Which state laws apply is a question for the rental company’s counsel.
