What the online course app had to do

A learner opens a course app for one of two reasons: to find a class, or to carry on with one. The app has to make both quick, and to mark the finish when it comes.

The design opens on new courses, with the subject filters just below. Each course card carries its lesson count, its tutor and the people taking it. The learner’s own courses sit in one list, each with a colored bar, and a finished course ends in a certificate to download.

  • Find a class fastNew courses first, then the filters.
  • Carry on with oneThe learner’s courses in one list.
  • Mark the finishA certificate to download at the end.

What we designed for the e-learning app

  1. App screens

Home, my courses, a course page and the certificate.

  2. Visual elements

Color, type, icons and cards for the app’s screens.

  3. Brand identity

The mark and wordmark, and their use on a round sign.

  4. Branded items

The identity applied to a polo shirt and to pens.

Before you brief anyone

Planning an e-learning app? Answer these before the screens

Map finding and resuming a course, then define complete, before the screens.

Request a scoping call
  1. Decide the two journeys first: finding a course and resuming one.

A learner returning mid-course should be back in the lesson in one tap, while a new user needs the catalog and its subject filters.

  2. Settle what each course card carries.

Lesson count, tutor and the number enrolled help a learner choose, but only while the data behind them stays current, so agree early who maintains it.

  3. Define what counts as complete.

Certificates and progress markers give a course an end, and each depends on a rule for when a lesson is finished. Our education page covers how we approach learning products.

  4. Scope design and development as separate steps.

Video, payments and offline access belong to e-learning app development, which is priced on its own, and our guide to mobile app development cost shows what drives it.

What screens does an online course app need?

At least a home screen for finding classes, a list of the learner’s own courses, a course page and a way to mark the finish. The Edulite design covers those four: new courses with subject filters, a my courses list with a colored bar for each course, a course page and a certificate to download.

What makes a good education app design?

It gets a learner into the right lesson quickly and keeps the path back into a course short. Edulite does this with course cards that carry the lesson count, the tutor and the people taking the course.

How much does it cost to build an e-learning app?

Video, payments, offline access and the number of platforms move the figure most, so we quote after scoping, not before. Our guide to mobile app development cost explains each driver.

Was a brand identity part of the Edulite design?

Yes. The mark and wordmark appear on a round white sign on a building, on a white polo shirt with blue trim and on two fountain pens in blue and gold.

Do you design education apps?

Yes. Edulite is design work we show under its project name, and our mobile app design service covers learning apps for schools, training providers and course platforms.
