Food delivery app design for sushi, from dark menu to order tracking

An app for ordering sushi, designed under the project name Zesty: a dark menu sorted by kind of sushi, the dish screen, the map that follows an order to the door, and the identity for the app.

The Zesty app on a phone standing on gray stone steps, showing a dark menu with a search bar, sushi categories and a dish named Hosomaki

What the sushi delivery app had to do

Someone ordering dinner on a phone wants to see the food, pick it and know when it will arrive. An ordering app has to keep those three steps short.

The design is dark, so the photographs of the food carry the screen. Red is kept for what the user acts on: the add to cart button, the home tab and the route on the map. A placed order shows its route, the estimated delivery time and buttons to message or call.

Before you brief anyone

Planning a food delivery app? Settle these first

Settle the model, the delivery and the menu source before the screens.

Request a scoping call
  1. Decide whether it is one restaurant’s app or a marketplace.

Restaurant app design centers on one menu and its regulars, while a marketplace needs restaurant listings, search across menus and a side for partners.

  2. Decide who delivers.

In-house riders, a delivery partner or pickup only each change the tracking screen, the delivery time estimate and the support flow, so this is settled before the order screens are drawn.

  3. Decide how the menu stays current.

Prices, stock and dishes change daily, so the app should read them from the point of sale or a menu system rather than a list someone edits by hand. Food delivery app development, with the rider and partner sides, is a separate build; see our mobile app development page.

  4. Then agree the screen list before comparing prices.

Our guide to mobile app development cost explains what each choice adds.

What screens does a food delivery app need?

At least a menu, a dish screen, a cart with checkout, and order tracking. Zesty shows three of them: a menu sorted by kind of sushi, a dish screen with quantity and add to cart, and a map that follows the order to the door.

What makes a restaurant app easy to order from?

Food photography that carries the screen, and one color kept for actions. In this design the background is dark, and red marks only the add to cart button, the home tab and the route on the map.

What should order tracking show in a delivery app?

Where the order is, when it will arrive and how to reach the driver. Zesty’s tracking screen shows the route on a map, an estimated delivery time, four order stages and buttons to message or call.

How much does a food delivery app cost?

It hangs on the delivery model, the menu integration and whether riders and restaurants get apps of their own, so we price it after a scoping call. Our guide to mobile app development cost explains the main factors.

Do you design food and restaurant apps?

Yes. We design food ordering and restaurant apps as part of our mobile app design work. Zesty is one example, down to its app icon.
